Last week, we introduced you to Say Lou Lou’s sprawling pop single “Better In The Dark.” This week the Swedish-Australian sister duo have returned with “Beloved,” the second single off their upcoming EP (set for a November 25th release via Columbia Records). “Better In The Dark” marked Say Lou Lou’s transition towards a more crowd-pleasing sound by pairing breathy, unaffected vocals with upbeat, danceable instrumentals. Lucky for us, the twins Miranda and Elektra Kilbey have once again perfected the combination on “Beloved.”
The track starts off with Say Lou Lou’s signature slow, wandering sound, but around the one-minute mark the sisters’ building vocals and a thumping baseline move the track towards a faster-paced hook that leads into a brilliantly anthemic chorus. Though “Beloved” is the B-side for Better In The Dark, it holds its own as a standout track — in my opinion, it’s the more radio-ready of the two. The simple, cutting lyrics (“Take, take, twist, shape / Tell me what you want from me / Call shots from your embrace / Love is all for self or hate”) drive the catchiness of the track, and I envision sixteen-year-old girls adding this to their angst-filled iTunes playlists along with “Royals” and “Roar.”
Over the past few months, the Kilbey sisters have pioneered a sound full of pop instrumentals and mellow undertones. After infusing the two in their outstanding first EP, they received an overwhelmingly positive response, and since then I have only had high expectations for their upcoming projects. Definitely keep an ear out for these girls — Say Lou Lou‘s first full-length album is slated for an early 2014 release.
