The vast majority of 19 year-old German electronic producer Sönke Schmidt’s music as Sønke (pronounced “sohn-keh”) is stark but subtle club music, physically invigorating instrumentals that reach for simple, sophisticated abstractions of dark house and seething techno. The newest offering from Sønke, though, navigates a much different musical avenue, but maintains much of the clean poise and precision of his more exhilarating tracks (see “Dunkelblau” and “Seemann“). More Bonobo than Nicolas Jaar, “My Faithful Companion” slinks soft and slow, building upwards and extending out as a cascading flurry of mostly organic sounds. The sparely arranged electronics merely serve to accentuate the illusion of natural landscapes, like the trickling rush of ice water. Stream the gorgeous four-minute track now.
