Chazwick Bradley Bundwick is a freak of nature. Over the last seven years, this restlessly chameleonic recording artist has shared many shades of his unique sound as Toro Y Moi–from the chillwave proto-funk of “Still Sound” to the roiling, swag-soaked future pop of “So Many Details.” Last year he even donned a supplementary alter-ego, Les Sins, to release the stank-faced house calisthenics of Michael. Bundwick’s apparent virtuosity does little to dampen the mild shock value of his latest contribution, “Empty Nesters.” The first single from his forthcoming album as Toro Y Moi, What For?, is a happy-go-lucky garage-rock romp, fuzzy and fresh but not without the songwriter’s natural propensity for funk. Sizzlying electronic distortion and sour, scuzzy basslines remind us of where we’ve been, and, more importantly, where we’re going. Watch Toro Y Moi perform live on KEXP below.
