A few years back, Very Fresh frontwoman played in NYC as Cindy Lou Gooden, the multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter’s given name. She shared bills and performed live with the likes of Ava Luna and Speedy Ortiz (the latter collab took the form of all-female Pavement cover band Babement). On her debut studio release as Very Fresh, the split 7-inch “Clean Touch” and “Pale Lips,” Gooden joined forces with Ava Luna’s Carlos Hernandez and Julian Fader, who played drums and bass and also recorded and mixed the two tracks. The A-side is a simple and swaggering post-punk jam, punctuated by Gooden’s sharp lyrical flow. “This eager timbre, does it make me sound cute?” she poses on the first line of “Clean Touch.” By the end of the track, it’s clear that sounding cute is hardly on her agenda.
