What's This?

FKA twigs, the patron saint of all things abnormal and queer, released a new track and an accompanying visual in conjunction with the YouTube Music Awards. A section of the track was debuted earlier this year in the FKA twigs-directed “#throughglass” video, during a bizarro montage of female dancers strutting their stuff. The fully-released, five-minute track, “Glass & Patron,” sees Tahliah Barnett working with Beyoncé -collaborator Boots, who co-wrote and co-produced the track with the virtuosic artist-producer.

There’s a clear distinction between this track and the careful aesthetic crafted on last year’s LP1. Barnett’s voice is fuller, cleaner, positioned further above the mix than ever above before. It sounds like she’s dangerously close, whispering in your ear, ready to strike at any moment. And while such sonic direction might insinuate an embracing of the pop-sensible mainstream, the second half of the “Glass & Patron” absolutely confounds the form. The strength of her vocals dissipates beneath the eerie electronic hysterics midway, as her lyrics take on a sexual verve, “Shut your eyes and feel the rush/Will you fuck me as I stare at the sun?” The visual, directed by twigs, takes places at night, in the middle of the woods, on a kind of Rocky Horror Picture Show-inspired runway set, where Barnett’s crew of men display a physical grace that’s utterly unique to the dance form of voguing. “Glass & Patron” will be featured on FKA twigs‘ forthcoming EP3 to be released later this year.
