Tahliah Barnett demands a certain kind of gaze. The harsh aesthetic she’s constructed as the seductive trip-hop songstress FKA twigs has always been remarkable, tenacious in its harrowing weirdness, but this new visual for “Video Girl” is something else. The cooing chorale and abrasive synthscape of LP1 cut “Preface” takes up the first half of the music video. Between staggering black-and-white shots by director Kahlil Joseph, the visual transitions to the contrapuntal beatwork and swoon-worthy falsettos of “Video Girl.” You can marvel at her moves, gape at her gall, but generously dispersed within the pervasive sensuality of FKA twigs is something subversive and powerful.
