The sudden, but not-so-unexpected breakup of Smith Westerns was a sad day for many in the music world. For some of the band members, it was the end of an era, while for others it was an opportunity to start fresh.
Teaming up with Unknown Mortal Orchestra‘s Julien Ehrlich, former Smith Westerns’ guitarist Max Kakacek decided to create his own project, Whitney, which takes its name from Ehrlich’s “first-kiss.” Born out of a mutual love of country music and Neil Young, the project feels like an homage of sorts to the classic Americana they no doubt draw inspiration from.
Along with four other members, the band recently inked a deal with beloved indie-rock label, Secretly Canadian. To celebrate, they have shared a charming new single entitled “No Woman,” along with a Hugh Donkin-directed video, which follows the band through the woods as they drink beers, light firecrackers, and throw the occasional tomahawk.
