What's This?

In this day and age, it seems like the only people you can count on are your friends and family. For Morgan Kibby (aka White Sea) and M83‘s Anothony Gonzalez, family means everything. The music industry is full of talented brother-sister duos: Caleb and Georgia Nott, Tom and Laura Misch, and Ben and Katie Marshall. But while Kibby and Gonzalez aren’t exactly in the same bloodline, the two of them share more than a few commonalities.

Before Kibby began her solo project, White Sea, she spent her time writing and recording music alongside Gonzalez in M83. Looking at the liner notes of Saturdays = Youth and Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, you can see that Kibby was heavily involved in the project. From “Kim & Jessie” to “Midnight City,” she has played a large part in M83’s unprecedented success. Despite this, her solo project still hasn’t quite taken off. Happily, however, with a little push and a well-deserved co-sign from her partner-in-crime, Gonzalez, things may soon change.

On “They Don’t Know,” Kibby combines all of the stadium-ready qualities of M83’s heavier efforts and makes them her own. From the deep, pounding drums to Kibby’s starry-eyed vocals, every part of this song just feels epic. While they’re not for everyone, Kibby’s vocals sure do sound impressive soaring over a rock backdrop. Full of life and emotion, they give the song its strength and make a bold statement in the process.
