Taking shape and standing tall just like any other tree, YEWS the experimental, dreamy, ethereal-pop band have just started spreading its roots across the hot, humid, dry lands of Malta.
Yasmin Kuymizakis the singer, and brains behind YEWS wanted to produce music from her time at university. Buying a Logic in Xmas of 2011, she didn’t take it too seriously at first but after going to New York and attending a lot of gigs, she knew that she needed to take this seriosuly. The first gig she did was just her on stage, but then she decided that she wanted people to help her out on stage. Despite this, she makes it clear its her own music, she is YEWS, and the others just help her on stage.
Yasmin doesnt follow a particular genre of music, she just creates what sounds good to her at the time, and goes with it. In her first gig she supported Malta’s legendary indie band Beangrowers, then from a living room she went viral by streaming herself performing live with two other bands.
Believing in immersion, everytime she plays, she like’s to take people to a different world, by putting on various masks, and different fairytale-like costumes, to give extra effort for visual pleasure too.
At the moment she hasn’t got any plans for an album, but she has a few ideas for an EP. Yasmin tell us that at the moment she just wantes to learn more and get better as she’s only been in the scene for a year, so there’s no rush.
Just like trees take time to grow and take shape, so does YEWS. And from the looks of her first music video with another one just released, she looks to be growing quite nicely.
